A Classic Camp

Last weekend, the MSM’s Writers’ Club packed up and headed out to Camp Warawee in Joyner for their annual camp. As part of their preparation the students explored four classics: Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, William Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing, Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, and Pirates of the Caribbean (known for it’s witty turn of phrase).

The girls came to camp dressed as characters from the stories they had studied and participated in a range of activities that helped them delve deeper into these narratives.  They then wrote their own pieces inspired by these experiences. Sometimes a character from one story would hop into another, creating new and exciting possibilities.

One of the daunting things about classics for modern readers is that language changes over time. It is worth having a vocabulary list for the book you are reading. Words are being invented all the time and they can also fade from popularity.  Here is a fun list of lost words. If you want to find some of the Classics in our library you can spot them because they have an “hourglass” genre sticker placed on their spines. You can find audio versions of many of the classics at LibriVox or you can look up the following authors on our catalogue:

Alcott, Louisa May   Carroll, Lewis   Montgomery, L.M
Austen, Jane   Dickens, Charles   Sewell, Anna
Bronte, Charlotte   Doyle, Arthur Conan   Spyri, Johanna
